Ruby Red Studios

Helen Berthold is an air hostess by day and amazing indie designer by night. Working full time and running two etsy shops Ruby 2 Go Go and Ruby Red Studios means that the Ruby HQs are always busy. Helen's work is fun and playful with a focus on vintage sourced materials and up-cycling. You can find Helen's work online in her etsy shops or if you prefer hands on shopping go to the Museum of Brisbane store or the BrisStyle Indie Designer's Market. This is one energetic crafter so if you'd like to join Ruby on her adventures then head to the Ruby 2 Go Go blog.

DIY - vintage storage idea

we found this clever way of up-cycling old vintage suitcases, to create clever storage for all of your materials at the diy ideas website. not only a cheap storage alternative if you can pick one up at an op shop for a bargain price, but once closed up, the suitcase will also double as a fun and quirky display. I love how they have lined it with vintage paper.

DIY - vintage doilies

check out these fabulous ideas from country living using vintage doilies. Above, create this gorgeous one of a kind vase by simply tightly wrapping a doily around a vase. Snip away any excess, then hand-stitch the doily securely in place to create a snug fit.

Or this starched doily basket - To shape a basket, soak a doily in liquid starch, squeeze out excess, and place doily over an inverted glass bowl covered in waxed paper. Dry one to three days, depending on humidity.

Even when doilies are imperfect, their intricate finery shines through. Stitch little favorites end to end to create a band, then slip it tightly around a bowl. Clear glass lets light pass through the handiwork.

For the lamp shade, remove the original fabric, leaving only the frame. Pin small doilies around the top, and then to one another, for a skirt like effect. Remove pinned doilies. Machine-stitch together. Slip "skirt" over frame; hand-stitch around frame's top.

Grandma's doilies never looked so good!
